Hi Guys,

I have been taking the minoxidil 5% solution for close to 2 yrs now and recently also started finpecia (finasteride) 1mg one a day (now been on it for around 3/4 months).

There are however two problems:

1. This seems to be working but when I feel my hair with my hands its still thinner and feels brittle - it actually feels like the hair texture has changed and not for the better, so much different to those 18 year old's or so that I see out with great hair and wonderful hair styles. Why is this - is it because the alcohol in the minoxidil solution is actually doing more harm than good? Usually when i put minoxidil on my scalp I don't just limit myself to the serious thinning areas but try to put it on every part evenly. And then if alcohol is actually doing the harm why do they include the ingredient in the first place?

2. I have a problem with scalp irritation - the skin on the forehead is often itchy and flaky sometimes even a little red (there are are a lot of flakes on the top of my forehead). I also seem to have flakes (big ones) on my hair - evident when I use the brush.. ;( I've been to a doctor who gave me Hydracort cream to treat the irritation but although it seems to relieve the irritation to some extent its still there and whenever I put some gel for going out in weekends the problem is excoriated after I come back home after a night of partying and wash my hair (to remove the gel).

Any advice would be appreciated. As a side note i'm 28 yrs old and my father is bald.

thanks in advance.

I've only started using mino and finasteride for the last 2 months.

1. I think alco is in it so that it get easily absorbed into the scalp or because it evaporates, i'm not sure but there's my guesses....

2. Try using nizoral shampoo every 3 days. On other days use a natural shampoo that you might get in a hippy style all natural ingredients shop. I got a great one there for damaged and stress hair a while ago that had no chemicals in it at all! btw head and shoulders and baby sham are the most harsh shampoos out there! Lastly on the get front, just use it sparsely and try not to get it on your scalp. Also if you are washing your hair before you put on the Regine, make sure its dry... I use a fiber gel at the weekends and don't bother washing it out at all... maybe move the the 2 percent??

btw i'm 28 too so i'm in the same boat..... btw any luck with the minoxidil on its own

Also i take perfectil skin, hair and nails tablets by vitabiotics which if nothing else are making my skin look great....

Minoxidil on its own did seem to partially stop the process however one of the main side-effects is that I noticed that my hair texture was changing - kind of a 'dryer' touch, my hair also seemed thinner than its natural state.

Guys could you please provide some more feedback. I'm sure there are plenty of you who have the same problems?

Yeah man, you're not alone.

Since I started Rogaine my whole hair became very brittle and dry too, even in the permanent zones. It's stated on the bottle that some people may see a change in hair texture while using the product.

I already stopped Rogaine and I'm hoping it changes back as the hair grows in another cycle, hopefully undamaged.

I have been taking Perfectil too for the last month and a half, it has made my skin look amazing, but has seemed to thicken up my body hair :(... just wondering if you have noticed this side effect too?
