This is my first post, but not my first time gathering info on this forum and others like it. After reading numerous accounts of hair loss, hair regrowth or a cessation of either, I’ve come to the following conclusions. Again, this is completely anecdotal and personal to me - I’m not a doctor nor an expert in any way on the science behind hair loss in men and its prevention. My treatment is 1mg of Finasteride once per day and 1ml of Minoxidil applied topically twice per day. I’ve been on this regimen for nearly a year and my doctor and I have appreciated zero results in terms of less shedding or regrowth.
My doctor and I still hold out hope, but these are my conclusions:
1) There are only a few “proven” treatments to prevent, reduce or reverse hair loss in men. Beyond the offerings of Get Roman, For Hims & Keeps, there’s not much else to turn to, except your primary care physician or a dermatologist. Even then, the information and recommended treatments are the same. Yes, there is that ridiculous laser helmet. I know nothing about it except that I’d rather put my money into a new washer/dryer set (which would be cheaper).
2) Of those treatments, all, some or none will be effective for any given individual. (Speaking as the pessimistic person I am, it’s highly likely that another man’s success story will be your tale of failure and frustration.) Don’t be surprised if you fall into that 1% that receive no benefit from any recommend treatments. Given the size of our global population, 1% is a significantly large group.
3) No one, not the doctors, researchers, scientists, chemists, etc. knows exactly what will prevent the loss of or contribute to the regrowth of YOUR hair. For every hundred studies that you read which “prove” the efficacy of a certain drug or treatment, there will be an equal number of contradictory studies.
4) You will NEVER regrow your hair in the same painless, rapid and fulfilling way that the success stories promise. You’re unique, and your body doesn’t function exactly like others’. And forget about reacquiring the hair you had in high school by simply taking a pill every day. It. Won’t. Happen.
5) The only, nearly foolproof, way to get that wonderfully thick and beautiful mane you had thirty years ago is surgical, painful and insanely expensive. And all you’re really doing is moving hair from one location to another. It’s a losing battle. Yes, I’ve seen the commercials with the dudes who emerge from an infinity pool and gracefully stroke their gorgeous, youthful locks while beautiful women gaze longingly at them. How did that happen? They never had a male pattern baldness problem to begin with, or they spewed out thousands of dollars that most of us can’t afford to move follicles around. Heh, in reality, they’re ACTORS.
6) At some point you’ll give up the fight. If you’re between 20 and 45, it’s probably worth a shot to try to save your hair. If you’re 45 to 50+, what does it matter anymore? Unless you’re a model or celebrity and need to maintain a certain appearance, your friends and family will love you just the same as they always have. Hair doesn’t make a man; character makes a man.
