Need Some Help- Late 20s, Receding/thinning Badly, Pics

Hi, I'm in my late 20's and in just the past six months have noticed really dramatic hair loss. I always had really thick hair, but now I have absolutely no volume and the hairline has just receded horribly. My father and grandfather both had tons of hair so I don't know if this is natural loss or something's causing it. It's *possible* it was slowly receding as I never scrutinized it, but seems like it just happened overnight.

I included pictures- I never used to look like this, my hairline is a lot higher and it's positively patchy when I pull it back or even when it's wet and combed. Part of the problem is I look so much younger than my age in every other way, so it's really upsetting and I don't know what happened. Could really use advice. I can post pictures of when I was younger but I'd need to edit out my face, I'm too ashamed. I won't lie that I'd feel better if people said nothing was wrong, but I know it's pretty bad, the pictures speak for themselves.

Could just be a mature hairline, i dont see any sign that would indicate you’re clearly balding, but thats just me

What parts specifically, like what is the 'tell'? I think I want to determine if it's like Sladewilson said and just a maturing hairline that'll stay where it is before I do anything. That's why I wanted to solicit opinions based on the pics.

Hello. sorry, it does seem like you are balding. But don't worry, there are treatment.

What differs you from an individual with a mature hairline is that your hair seems to be thinning aswell.

Mature hairline = early stages of male pattern baldness....don't lose precious time with the "mature hairline" cope

I recommend the go-to beginner regimen: finasteride + minoxidil + nizoral shampoo....be consistent for 6 months to 1 year, then assess your situation. You will likely get years of maintenance + at least some regrowth since your loss is recent

We have pretty similar hairlines I think.
I'm on finasteride, nizoral, biotin and castor oil FYI.

Going to try the treatments, already on Rogaine although it says to not use for receding hairlines. Don't know if I should apply it "all over" my head to help the patchy thinning spots.

Could an of this be caused by a medication called gabapentin? It's an anti-seizure med. This hair loss all just sort of happened int he last six months, and that's really only thing different in my lifestyle in that period of time. If it's just aging I can't explain the bad thinning.

Got any pictures of how your hair was before you feel like it happened?

Looks like straight up male pattern baldness to me. I dont see any reason to think its anything else, but that being said its more important you decide that for sure. Has your hair always been like that or have you lose significant density or have bald spots at temples you didnt at younger age? You dont have male pattern baldness if you never had hair there to begin with. Not everyone has a straight 100 percent dense hairline. If you did though then you have lost a lot of hair already and its male pattern baldness for sure

Here are some pictures. I used to have really thick hair, and it looks like I lost quite a bit. Went on medication 8-months-a year ago, maybe longer. Pics are in chronological order from 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and today, with a couple of shots of the back of head. Compared to how I look now in OP post #1 of course.

I feel like I can see some serious inflamation in that shaved head pic. You still have really nice hair so even if you are losing just be thankful you made it to your age until it became noticeable. over 70% of caucasian men have the male pattern baldness gene so don't feel too bad about it, you have every opportunity now to keep your hair until you are well into your forties assuming you go the finasteride route.

any side effects? dosage?

This would be the only side effect, maybe some weight loss. Dosage is a bit high tbh. I guess I have to live with it if it's male pattern baldness, just can't tell if I've lost gradually since 2014 or if it all started at once in last six months, which tells me it's the gabapentin. Any opinions based on the pics appreciated.

Where does one get an easy prescription/steady supply of finasteride from? It'd be hard to be referred to a hair specialist by a gen. practitioner and then go every month, for the rest of my life, or risk missing a dose.

mature hairlines are like Santa Clause you can believe in them but they don’t exist.

It’s a polite way of saying slight male pattern baldness

FYI mature hairlines are caused by the same process as regular male pattern baldness- DHT sensitivity

False. I had a much smaller forehead when I was 15 which made my hairline look a lot lower. Ever make a character in a video game with an editor that allowed to change every physical characteristic? Try making a girl and then make her forehead 10x bigger, now it looks like her hairline is "receding".

It's a combination of larger forehead + slight recession.
