Propecia - not everyone is having side effect?

I often see quite a lot of people posting on this forums about experiencing side effect after taking propecia - I'm wondering if those side effects happen to everyone? Is it possible to take propecia for a long term without any side effects at all?

I started taking 1mg propecia about a month ago. Having read so many negative things about the side effects, I've been taking my 1mg propecia every other day so that my body will get used to the drug. A month later I haven't noticed I have developed gynecomastia or that my libido has gone down (if anything my sex drive has gone up). I haven't noticed any improvement on my hair loss but I understand it will take so time.

Anyway now I'm thinking of taking 1mg propecia every day for now on but I'm just wondering how long does it take before any side effects kick in? Will I develop say man boobs six months into taking propecia?

Yes you will. And you will also not be able to get an erection 8 months into taking Propecia.
Now seriously - what is this stupid question? how can one know if you will develop or not develop any side effect? As you probably already know - NOT 100% of people get side effects from Propecia, so why open a thread asking a question you probably know the answer.
Just stick with this drug, try it on yourself. If you respond well - great. If not - quit it.

Be nice, guys. OP, not everyone gets sides while taking finasteride. A small percentage of men do. I, for example, have been on it for 4 months and haven't noticed anything.

It will take approximately 6 months for the sides to kick in. I literally went from being flat chested at 6 months, to being a full D cup at 6 months and one day.

I met my doctor today. And this is what he said: "Not everyone has side effects. In fact, incidence is rare. Not everyone who smokes gets cancer either. The only way to find out if your body tolerates it is to try it."

thank you for your post. i have a friend who has been taking it for 3 months and has not had any side effects. his hair doesn't look any different either tbh so that's at least good that hes not losing it anymore.

i am losing my hair am also thinking of taking it, so please keep us updated on how everything goes!

Personally I think sides are overblown although they are possible. I've been on 7+ yrs with no issues taking the normal dose daily. If I was having adverse affects somehow I clearly don't even notice them.

Remember not only do many doctors prescribe propecia like anything else but there are guys who have been on this for 10, 15+ years and several studies have been done done. All medications can have risks but personally I think there is extra scrutiny because this one is for normal male hair loss. I love how there is such a high risk talked about when we refer to finesteride in terms of treating male pattern baldness, but nobody complains there are plenty of guys with BPH (enlarged prostate) taking 5mg day proscar for years on end.

Of course I'm not a doctor or hair loss expert so don't take my advice seriously. Only stating my opinion based on experience.

Purpose of review: To examine the clinical and basic studies regarding persistent adverse effects associated with 5α reductase inhibitor treatment for androgenetic alopecia.
Recent findings: Recent postmarketing reports and a US Food and Drug Administration analysis have documented uncommon persistent sexual and nonsexual side-effects in a subset of younger men who have taken finasteride 1 mg for androgenic alopecia. While the mechanisms of the sexual side-effects in humans is incompletely understood, one study found lower cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of dihydrotestosterone, progesterone, dihydroprogesterone and allopregnanolone, and higher levels of testosterone, 5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol and pregnenolone. Another study found up-regulation of the androgen receptor in the human foreskin with a mean of 5 years after finasteride discontinuation. Studies of erectile dysfunction in finasteride-treated rats showed fewer autophagosomes in smooth muscle on transmission electron microscopy, increased apoptosis, decreased smooth muscle, increased collagen deposition and decreased endothelial nitric oxide synthase. Finally, 5α reductase inhibitors have also been found to alter semen parameters in healthy men.
Summary: Multiple animal studies provide a biological basis for many of the persistent effects seen in humans such as erectile dysfunction, depression and decreased alcohol consumption. Prescribers of 5α reductase inhibitors should discuss the potential risks with their patients seeking treatment for androgenetic alopecia.

All men will experience some degree of "sides" from Finasteride, unless for some reason the drug is not able to act on their 5AR enzyme to inhibit DHT conversion (and I'm not aware of of any documentation indicating that can happen). The direct effects of DHT inhibition typically include reduced hair loss and prostate shrinkage. Indirect effects can include gynocomastia (DHT has a protective effect on certain tissues as it cannot be aromatised into Estrogen), lower libido and/or erection issues (possibly due to the absence of DHT itself, or as a result of increased Estrogen aromatization due to the increase in T, or possibly due to some other factor that isn't well understood), and depression (due to Allopregnanolone depletion).

As for why some men report sexual issues and others don't, it's anybody's guess. Some men's endocrine systems may be better equipped to deal with the hormonal changes finasteride brings about, or they may not be aware that changes have occurred, as they can come on fairly slowly (as in my case). Still others may prefer to disregard changes, even to themselves, as they're dedicated to preserving their hair first and foremost. Ultimately endocrinology is not one of the better understood fields of medicine, so I don't think we're going to have answers to many of these questions anytime soon.

Nate, if I've had sides it has to be a smaller prostate and more hair. That's it. From day one, I've never had any sides that I've been aware of. I'm a very lean gym rat and I'd certainly notice one ounce of gynecomastia. I was unhappy in my previous marriage and use to frequent good old pornhub more times than I care to remember. I'm currently in a relationship with a great girlfriend and am the most sexual active I've been in my entire life. Sure my libido is going down. Sure, I can't go all night. But I was 39 when we met and I was still good for 3x per day. And I'm almost 42 now. If my libido isn't the same as it was when I was 18, that's completely normal. So if I have had any changes over the years, they've been slow enough to be inline with my natural aging process.

I should consider myself lucky. A huge number of guys over 40 have ED that have never touched finasteride!! So I'm still doing pretty good, relatively speaking.

That said, I don't want to take this drug forever and I'm old enough that I don't care so much about hair. So I'd like to quit soon. I would've been totally fine until I googled it and found PropeciaHelp. Now I'm worried sick. I'm going to slowly ramp down over the course of 6 months to a year to let my body slowly resort to normal levels of DHT.

The key for me is going to be the mental game. If I'm worried about ED and libido then there's a good chance I'm going to have issue with ED and libido. So much of this is mental. If had ED a few times in my life (before finasteride). Each time, it occurred because I was nervous with a new partner, thus I had performance anxiety. It wasn't a physical issue - it was a mental issue. Later that night, I had to go home and finish myself off. Pipes worked just fine. If I truly had ED, that wouldn't have been the case.

The key for me will be getting off finasteride slowly, and keeping a confident, positive mindset that I'll be just fine. And if for some reason I start to have issues on the way down, well then I'll just ramp back up again. After all, I've been great for 12 years now. I guess having to take this drug forever wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

I wouldn't worry too much if you've been on the drug for 12 years and haven't noticed any issues that couldn't be attributed to aging, but I agree that it's probably a good idea to wean off it (via increasingly infrequent doses, not just smaller doses).

Nate, that's my plan. I don't want to have to worry about cutting pills. When I do quit, I'll just start going every other day for a while, then once every three days, and so on.

I'll likely consult with a professional endocrinologist first as well. I may sign off for a while as the Internet is messing with my head and I was feeling totally fine before I started researching this stuff.
