I have frontal thinning. What's best? I'm very confused. gourmetstylewellness.com seems to be very fond of Toppik but the different topics in here seem to state otherwise...

Please help!

Dermmatch by FAR over toppik.

Dermmatch is a miracle and is without doubt the best product I've ever spent money on related to my hairloss.

Its quite cheap and lasts for about 6-7 months and has been for me an absolute life saver.

If for instance you're a NW3 it *can* give the impression you're a NW1 or better.

Also you mention gourmetstylewellness.com is very fond of Toppik.

Well just as a general rule of thumb I would always approach what is meant to be objective analysis with a degree of caution if that person stands to benefit financially in some way by his/her recommendations.

Any other experinces guys?

I'm sorry but if your a norwood 3 in front, *no concealer* can give you the appearance of a norwood 1. I'm shocked that anyone would even say this. How can a concealer add an inch or 2 to a hairline? Rediculous
The truth is NONE of these products work well on the hairline.
Sad but true. If you do decide to use a concealer make sure you just don't use bathroom light. Take a mirror to a room in the house where sunlight gets in. put your hairline in that sunlight and look in the mirror. Prepare to be horrified at what you see. I think these products can work to a degree but not on the hairline.

BHD you must be easily shocked then. I would advise you don't read the news.

Anyway I am prepared to concede that an advance from NW3 to NW1 is perhaps optimistic but certainly dermmatch can give the impression of a much much fuller hairline than you would care to admit.

I still stand by what I said though - I think dermmatch is an excellent product and I suspect that you are very much in the minority for thinking it is anything but.

BTW is that blurb on concealers actually based on your own personal experience or not?

My hairline is intact, I just want to add some volume to my thinning front. Is dermmatch the answer then?

That was an uncalled for shot. Why can't we debate without taking shots at one another?. To say that painting 1-2 inches of hairless scalp and it looks like hair is an incredibly misleading statement to make to a newbie or anyone for that matter.

Perhaps optimistic??? I'd say totally misleading...Dermatch is a hard packed powder. The only way you could add two inches to the hairline with it would be to paint 2 inches of scalp in front of the hairline. Oh yea that'll look good :D I agree that it will work on a hairline that has just started some diffusing but that's about it. If you have significant diffusing on the hairline it will be detectable.

Some people like it some people hate it as with anything. No way to tell who's in the minority. However Dermatch does give a good moneyback guarentee since there is no limit on it.

YES it is. I wouldn't have posted otherwise and that's how I was able to suggest using a mirror in sunlight to show how visible these concealers really are.

How come Dermatch only has one guy in their photo gallery? Keep in mind this is a professional photo with controlled lighting and I'm sure a professional make-up artist applied the dermatch to this guy and it is OH-SO detectable just from this photo. Now imagine this guy outside with direct sunlight over his head or in an office with that great fluorescent lighting we all love.

All the concealers work fine if you use them correctly. Lots of people on here complain about Toppik being "sawdust" when they pour it on their heads. I don't know if these guys just dump Toppik on their scalp and expect a miracle--you have to work at it too. Brush it through your thinning areas. Personally, I think Toppik works the best, but I also use DermMatch some days because it's a hell of a lot cheaper considering it lasts about 6 times longer.

Well, I worked with it for about 15 minutes, brushed different ways, tried everything I could, and it looked like sawdust. Part of the problem was that it wasn't exactly the color of my hair -- the blond is too light, the light brown is too dark. The other part is that no matter how much brushing I did, it simply was very obvious in my hair.

There really is solution to a receding hairline....BUT if you suffer from diffuse thinning, vertex balding, or even slight recession than hands down the best strategy is to use DERMMATCH AND PROthik in combination. Prothik is basically a spray "hair in a can" but the results are ridiculous. The product is cheap and lasts for around 4-5 months. I swim and sweat with both products and neither washes out. The only negative aspect is that sometimes it wipes off easily on pillow cases, towels, and the inside of hats. Seriously though everyone here should own or at least try both products...you have nothing to lose except maybe $30 but the stuff is incredible

Good point...you do have to have the correct hair color. I tried Courve medium brown one time and it was terrible... I had to go for dark brown after that.

Mix and match...give it a shot. I know DermMatch will send you two separate colors (one for free) with your first order just so you can get your hair color to match exactly.

Good luck.

Aren't these two statements mutual exclusive?

Hey BHD - was only pulling your leg!! :)

Anyway one thing to advise with concealers (qdoc; HLH) is that

1) Once you start using them you might have to be prepared to use them every day. It is akin to wearing a toupee one day and leaving the rug at home on the following day. Colleagues, friends, or family might suspect you were doing something to conceal your hairloss if you only used it on "special occasions".

2) It is a pain using dermmatch every day. Other products, (e.g., toppik, fullmore, etc) require much less time to apply.

3) Dermmatch can get everywhere, especially all over your bathroom. The "powder" residue disperses in the air after you apply it and you comb your hair. Well, what started up must come down...the dispersed powder adheres to walls, the floor, and anything else it comes into contact with. Also, don't even think about using white pillow cases unless you meticulously wash your hair each and every time you lay down in bed otherwise you'll be leaving a signature "calling-card" on a pillow case - which could be rather embarrassing if staying the night somewhere.

Okay. I think you guys are talking about concealers in general. I want an answer to my specific situation: I have diffuse thinning in front, hairline intact. What should I go for? Toppik, Dermmatch or Prothik? I have also seen this product, called Nanogen.

See this movie: http://www.nanogen.co.uk/watch_nanogen_in_action_HQ.htm

Is it something to go for or same as Toppik?

Use Couvre....been on it since 1993. What you do for the front is make sure you do not have much on the applicator. Best to do crown first if need to. If not just put a small amount on applicator and lightly pat the frontal area, just trying tone down the white scalp. Make sure you put it on consistently...dont miss any area. I have had the hair transplant surgeon and nurse fooled by this. They could not believe how good it looks. Couvre Rocks!!!
