Yes, the USA's addiction to junk food is really why obesity is such a problem.

You should see the movie Super Size Me. Very good expose on the whole fat problem in the USA

will taking green tea extract pills give you the same benfits as drinking the tea? i have a bottle of pills that I bought a few months back. I havent been taking them, but after reading some of those articles I should not let them go unused.

also does it matter what brand of green tea you drink? or do all green teas have the same beneficial ingredients?

While I am sure you feel better cassin. However, i think its more to do with your giving up soda and coffee. Soda is absolutely TERRIBLE for you. Just sugar and caffine. Good job on giving it up! The number of people in the USA with weight problems I think would go down substantially if they gave up this sugar water. :)

Also, if you dont like the taste of green tea (I like it actually), just add some Equal or Splenda. Don't dump sugar into tea, it makes it just like soda.

I was drinking diet soda, no sugar. :)I have gone weeks before without soda or coffee but didn't drink green tea before.

Its amazing how something like losing your hair bucks your ideas up and makes you look at your diet.

Agreed, looking at everything I am healthier now than I have ever been in my life due to hairloss. At least we can take some positives out of this right?

Very slanted movie but still worth a rental.

I once saw a study (I forgot to save it, sorry) and they tested the top 20 mass produced green teas and Celestial Seasonings was hands down the best for you, no question. Thankfully because I hate the taste of green tea and CS is the only one that tastes VERY good.

You are correct on both accounts as far as I am aware, what you failed to mention in your first point is the method for the alleged benefits for drinking green tea for hairloss. Green tea combined with another product found in some peoples bodies prodcues a substance called Equol.

That's not quite correct. It's a component of SOY, not green tea, which is converted in the gut to equol by certain bacteria which some people have.

Doing a quick Google search on "equol green tea", I did notice a study which seemed to find a higher incidence of equol producers among green tea drinkers, so the authors speculated that maybe green tea consumption enhances that conversion from soy to equol in some way, shape, or fashion.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong about equol binding with androgen receptors. I believe the ONLY known action of equol is to bind with DHT itself, rendering it harmless. I don't think it has any affinity for the androgen receptor, so it's neither an agonist nor an antogonist for that receptor.

That is exactly what I said in my previous post, scientists claim that Equol binds with DHT, this renders the DHT unable to bind with androgen receptors.

Bryan said:
BTW, if you want to get essentially the same effect as equol, just use a 5a-reductase inhibitor like finasteride or dutasteride. The results should be the same.
Bryan

Not necessarily. We do not know every function that enzyme 5a-reductase serves(it may do other things in the long term we do not know of). for example talking finasteride increases testosterone levels because testosterone does not get converted to DHT by enzyme 5a-reductase(as it has been eliminated by finasteride). Equol on the other hand allegedly only effects DHT thus not affecting enzyme 5a-reductase and testosterone levels.

Huh?? You also said that equol would bind with androgen receptors, if it had a chance. I don't think it would.

Not necessarily. We do not know every function that enzyme 5a-reductase serves(it may do other things in the long term we do not know of).

You are correct that it alters other steroids, too. For example, it converts progesterone into dihydroprogesterone (DHP). The significance of that is unknown, however.

People always say that, but it's probably inacurrate. The MAIN and probably FUNDAMENTAL reason that taking finasteride increases testosterone levels a bit is that DHT has been proven to be a player in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis regulation of testosterone production. In other words, when you sharply reduce the production of DHT, the body senses that decline in potent androgen production and increases LH and FSH a bit to compensate, which in turn is the signal to the testes to start producing more testosterone. The simple fact that there is less testosterone being converted to DHT may not actually have anything directly to do with it, at all!

I guarantee you that if equol inactivates DHT molecules, it will definitely increase testosterone a little, for the reasons I explained before! You can't get away from that, I'm afraid. Again, the effects of equol should be _quite_ similar to that of finasteride or dutasteride, with the possible exception of those other steroids which can be altered by 5a-reductase. And the significance of THAT remains to be seen. The "pseudohermaphrodites" in the Dominican Republic don't appear to have any serious problems with their 5a-reductase deficiency, other than the obvious ones with their sexual development. Otherwise, they appear to be healthy individuals.

Hmmm...I have to admit, since I grew up with my Mom's intense interest in natural treatments as opposed to medicinal treatments, this thread grabbed my attention:) I'll have to look more into this green tea thing that's for sure.

Green tea tastes okay. Its a bit bland and grassy tasting, I only find it inviting after I sex it up a bit with honey and lemon.

I do like normal 'black' varieties of tea quite a bit! They can be delicious, especially if you buy some real leaf tea from a quality source. It's a true treat, and brewing the actual leaves is the only way to make it, and a lot better than the pre-bagged stuff. Once you try tea brewed from good tea leaves, you'll never go back to the pre-bagged stuff.

I've tried 'white' tea as well. I thought it tasted like sh*t.

It should only steep for 3 minutes tops or again it will be bitter.

This is why I love the Celestial Seasonings brand, it isn't bitter at all.

Maybe my taste is very different from you all, but I find Celestial and Adajio tea absolutely horrible. You guys should try altitudetea's oolong or jasmine pearl.

CS anti-oxidant and Honey Lemon Ginseng taste fantastic. I can't stand any regular flavors. Which is odd because I love wheat grass.

I'm with you The Gardener, White Tea is disgusting.

No I did not. I said that Equol binds with DHT stoppping the DHT from being able to attach itself to the androgen receptors. This however does not matter since we agree on this point.

Green tea (and black tea) are good for your health. No doubt about that, however, make sure to put some green tea ON YOUR HEAD!! :)

10 minutes ago I drink the first cup of GT since 3 years. It tastes great. I think I'll made the switch from coffee to tea.

I went back to see what you had written, and now I see the reason for the confusion. You previously wrote:

"If the Equol did not attach itself to the DHT it would bind with the androgen receptor...."

I took that to mean that if the equol did not attach itself to the DHT, then the _equol_ would bind to the androgen receptor! :) It pays to double-check your posts, just to make sure that what you wrote isn't confusing or misleading. I always try to remember to do that, myself...

...have anyone seen results from drinking green tea for hairloss or seen improvements of their daily life ?

Men should know that drinking coffee and colas leads to the dreaded enlarged prostate. Ever see that stuff that settles at the bottom of a cup of coffee if you don't wash the cup right away? That's the stuff that collects and wraps around your prostate gland after awhile.

I switched form cofee to green tea just because it's a healthier beverage.

Can't say that it's helped grow any hair though. But if you're drinking large daily quantities of coffee and/or colas - make the switch to green tea for your overall improved general health.
