That's not quite correct. It's a component of SOY, not green tea, which is converted in the gut to equol by certain bacteria which some people have.
Doing a quick Google search on "equol green tea", I did notice a study which seemed to find a higher incidence of equol producers among green tea drinkers, so the authors speculated that maybe green tea consumption enhances that conversion from soy to equol in some way, shape, or fashion.
